Saint Petersburg Aquatics brought home five awards from the Florida Swimming’s House of Delegates convention this past weekend.

Saint Petersburg Aquatics brought home five awards from the Florida Swimming’s House of Delegates convention this past weekend.  Florida Swimming annually recognizes its top age group athletes and coach as well as senior athletes and coach.

The plaque St. Petersburg Aquatics’ Melanie Margalis received as Florida Swimming’s 2017 Senior Girls Long Course Swimmer of the Year.

Winning Senior Girls Athlete of the Year for Short Course was SPA’s Melanie Margalis.  Melanie also won the Senior Girls Athlete of the Year for Long Course. Melanie is a graduate of the University of Georgia.  She competed last year in the 2016 Olympics Games bringing home a gold medal as a member of the U.S. Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay.  This year she was a member of the U.S. World Championship team competing in Budapest, Hungary and again brought home a gold medal as a member of the U.S. Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay.  Melanie is a current member of the U.S. National team.

The plaque St. Petersburg Aquatics’ Robert Finke received as Florida Swimming’s 2017 Long Course Swimmer of the Year in the 17-18 boys age group.

SPA’s Robert Finke was named the 17-18 Boys Athlete of the Year for Short Course and 17-18 Boys Athlete of the Year for Long Course.  Robert is a senior at Countryside High School.  In 2016 Robert finished 7th in the 1500M Freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials and then went on to compete in the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii.  There he took gold medals in the 800M and 1500M Freestyles setting new records in those events.  This year Robert took second in the 1500M Freestyle at Nationals and was named to the U.S. World Championship team competing in Budapest.  Robert is a current member of the U.S. National team.

The plaque St. Petersburg Aquatics’ Fred Lewis received as Florida Swimming’s 2017 Senior Coach of the Year.

Making the fifth is Fred Lewis, Head Coach of SPA.  Coach Fred was named Senior Coach of the Year.  Coach Fred has been the head coach of SPA since 1988, one of the longest tenures of coaching the same team in the state.  He is also a National Team coach.
